Power Yoga

A heated, strength building, full-body blast that will challenge your body and mind. Facilitates detoxification, and promotes a sense of energy and empowerment.

Power Yoga is a heated, strength building, full-body blast that will challenge your body and mind. It facilitates detoxification, and promotes a sense of energy and empowerment. Designed to be a workout, this athletic style of yoga is inspired by the more traditional ashtanga yoga system. Unlike the ashtanga, which has six distinct sequences and places little emphasis on dynamic transitions, power yoga classes are fluid and creatively sequenced.

Common Postures:

Sun Salutations, warrior series, high and low plank, single leg balancing poses, back bends, inversions and arm balances.

Body Benefits:

Strength, coordination, cardiovascular health

Power yoga flow was created by notable yogis Beryl Bender Birch, Bryan Kest and Baron Baptiste. It came onto the scene in the late 1980’s to provide fitness-focused westerners with a more attractive and accessible way to practice yoga. Unlike its classical predecessor (link to Ashtanga page) power yoga emphasizes physicality over philosophy, relying fully on the intelligence of the body and depth of the breath to inform the mind.

Our Power Yoga classes are 60 minutes long and taught in a hot room. Each class has a specific theme – twisting, lateral side bending, or spinal flexion and extension. Expect to build heat quickly and flow at a strong pace as you skillfully warm and prepare your body for the peak pose. Power yoga classes challenge the cardiovascular system, build strength and increase flexibility.

Power Yoga is a fantastic class but it’s not suited for new yoga practitioners. Physically it’s one of our more advanced classes, and the heat adds an additional challenge. If you’re looking specifically for yoga All Levels classes like Deep Stretch and Flow are great places to begin. And if it’s a workout challenge you seek sign up for Boot Camp. This “no yoga” interval training class is not for the faint of heart!
