It’s always been my firm belief that when it comes to group fitness classes, a huge percentage of my personal satisfaction depends on the quality of the instructor. Over the last almost-year that I’ve been practicing yoga, I’ve complied this list of what I believe makes a great yoga instructor and thus, a great class experience.

In September, Erin Murray – a Boot Camp instructor at our studios in Chicago – graciously shared her story with the Yoga Six community. Her message was dynamic, she spoke about the power of positivity less than a month after she had brain surgery to remove a tumor from her cerebellum. When I last spoke to Erin in late August, she was recovering at her parent’s house. Fast forward five months and Erin is back to work full-time and she is teaching her beloved Boot Camp classes at Yoga Six South Loop. To wrap-up the February Challenge, Erin agreed to share her story to help us put things into perspective.

I’ve never enjoyed yoga. I’ve never enjoyed exercising, either. My shin splints and tight hamstrings meant I could not exercise and “feel good” afterward….Despite my unusually tight hamstrings (though they may be slightly better) and zero flexibility, I still show up to my mat for the same reasons: to keep my head in the right place and work through my pain.

Yoga challenges, like cleanses can seem really intimidating when you think about the entirety of 16 or 28 days. The key is to commit fully, and then take it one day at a time. The practice of yoga, is just that, it’s a practice. So you need to approach it that way. Each day is going to be different because our bodies and minds are in different states each day, especially as you begin to add the physical challenge that comes with a daily commitment over time.

To wrap-up our January theme of Live Alive and to kick-off our February Challenge, Neeloo, a member of our community, – a student from Columbus, Ohio – graciously shared her story with us. Her story exemplifies the courage it takes to Live Alive amid life’s greatest challenges. Last year, Neeloo was seriously injured on her walk to work. She shared her story, in her own words.
